How People Use the Internet to Sexually Exploit Children and Teens
Children are often groomed or extorted into capturing images or videos of themselves and sharing them by someone who is not physically present in the room with them, for example, on live streams or in chat rooms. Sometimes children are completely unaware they are being recorded and that there is then a image or video of them being shared by abusers. Many of these images are taken at home in children’s bedrooms or in family bathrooms when the child is alone or with another child such as a sibling or friend. The laws in each state vary, but in some cases children can be charged criminally for sexual behaviors with other children. Depending on the severity of the activity, the behavior could fall under the legal definitions of abuse and a child could be charged. If you are uncertain about whether the sexual behavior could be considered criminal, learn the statutes by consulting your Attorney General’s office or get a sex-specific evaluation from a specialist.
A large chunk of the victims, 38.8 percent, in 2022 were minors who took selfies, while 16.9 percent were filmed secretly, and 15.7 percent were victims filmed during prostitution or sex. Back in 2013, those in their 30s made up the largest age group, followed by those in their 20s and teens. AI-generated child sexual abuse images are spreading. Law enforcement are racing to stop them
- But using the term ‘child pornography’ implies it is a sub-category of legally acceptable pornography, rather than a form of child abuse and a crime.
- The prosecutions come as child advocates are urgently working to curb the misuse of technology to prevent a flood of disturbing images officials fear could make it harder to rescue real victims.
- Some adults form ‘friendships’ with minors online with the intention of eventually meeting to sexually abuse them.
- The Justice Department says existing federal laws clearly apply to such content, and recently brought what’s believed to be the first federal case involving purely AI-generated imagery — meaning the children depicted are not real but virtual.
Many youth who look for this content do not realize that it is illegal for them to look at it, even if they are a minor themselves. Where multiple children were seen in the images and videos, we saw that Category C images accounted for nearly half. In these images the children are often displaying their genitals and are with another child who may or may not also be displaying themselves. Some child porn adults form ‘friendships’ with minors online with the intention of eventually meeting to sexually abuse them. The process of developing a relationship with a child with the intention of sexually abusing them is often called ‘grooming’, a series of warning signs in a person’s behaviors that can increase a child’s vulnerability and their risk of being sexually abused. The Organization for Pornography and Sexual Exploitation Survivors (PAPS) is a nonprofit organization that offers counseling on how to request deletion of online child porn images and videos.

OnlyFans was a big winner during the pandemic, exploding in popularity as much of the world was housebound. The social media platform has grown nearly 10-fold since 2019, and now has more than 120 million users. The UK’s most senior police officer for child protection also says children are being “exploited” on the platform. The goal is to increase the chances of users being exposed to advertisements.
Childline counsellors have come across a number of cases in which under-18s, some of whom are vulnerable, reference their use of OnlyFans. The deputy head asked to be anonymous to protect the identities of the children. In its response, OnlyFans says all active subscriptions would now be refunded. It said it is now liaising with the police, but had not previously been contacted about the account.
According to his friend Jordan, Aaron didn’t have his own account, but instead “got sucked into” appearing in explicit videos posted by his girlfriend, Cody, who was a year older than him. BBC News has found that creators can share content and then arrange payments through alternative providers, in violation of company guidelines. One of the most popular is Cash App, which allows users to transfer money by mobile phone.
